He completed his internship at St. Michael's Hospital at the University of Toronto and his residency at University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. Dr. Shields completed a fellowship in microvascular neurosurgery at the University of Vermont in Burlington. He is board certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the American Board of Neurological Surgery, as well as several other professional medical associations.
