Oncology

Bone tumor
A bone tumor is an abnormal growth of cells that occurs in bone. A tumor also can develop in soft tissue, such as muscle, tendons, nerves or blood vessels. Tumors may be benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Orthopaedic oncology is a highly specialized orthopaedic subspecialty that provides diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant musculoskeletal tumors.

While our Norton Orthopaedic Care specialists often can treat benign tumors, malignant tumors generally are referred to Norton Cancer Institute’s orthopaedic oncologist – a member of a multidisciplinary team of skilled oncologists and radiologists. In fact, our staff includes Kentucky’s only orthopaedic oncologist, who provides evaluation and treatment of musculoskeletal tumors and metastatic lesions. We also manage orthopaedic conditions in cancer patients, such as fractures, trauma, arthritis, avascular necrosis, osteoporosis or infections, which may require specialized treatment in conjunction with cancer treatment.
