What is Hyperparathyroidism?
Hyperparathyroidism occurs when a benign tumor forms on one or more of the four parathyroid glands in the neck or chest. Too much parathyroid hormone is released, resulting in an elevated level of calcium in the body. During the MIRP, the patient is injected with a special solution called a radioisotope, which allows the surgeon to see the diseased gland in 80 percent of the cases. The procedure requires very small incision, often one inch in length.Hyperparathyroidism mainly affects women but also can affect men.

How to Get Tested
Ask your primary care physician or an endocrinologist to run a routine blood test to check for hyperparathyroidism.
