Norton Neuroscience Institute is committed to providing the region’s most comprehensive care for people with epilepsy and seizure disorders. Our multidisciplinary team consists of some of the nation’s most highly trained clinicians who have access to a state-of-the-art epilepsy monitoring unit at Norton Brownsboro Hospital in northeastern Louisville.
Epilepsy is a brain disorder involving repeated, spontaneous seizures of any type. Epilepsy is not a single disorder but rather a wide spectrum of problems. What all types of epilepsy share are recurrent, unprovoked seizures caused by an uncontrolled electrical discharge from nerve cells in the cerebral cortex. This part of the brain controls higher mental functions, general movement, the functions of the internal organs in the abdominal cavity, perception and behavioral reactions.
Norton Neuroscience Institute’s comprehensive epilepsy program provides:
- Individualized therapy directed by a multidisciplinary team of physicians with subspecialty fellowship training in epilepsy neurology, epilepsy neurosurgery and epilepsy neuropsychology
- Treatment options ranging from management of medications and diet to surgical therapies, such as brain surgery and vagus nerve stimulation
- Comprehensive pre-surgical evaluations for patients whose medications fail to control seizures, including advanced brain imaging, Wada testing and electrode placement for seizure mapping and monitoring
- Six large, comfortable, private rooms with 24/7 continuous seizure monitoring and supervision by specially trained EEG technicians and nurses to ensure proper evaluation and patient safety
- Epilepsy monitoring unit admission wait time typically less than two weeks and neurosurgery appointments in less than two days
- Support services, including psychiatry and physical, occupational and cognitive therapies
- Community outreach through free educational seminars for patients, families and physicians, and a strong association with local and national epilepsy organizations
